Eduardo Gonnelli

Data Science and Scientific Computing

Welcome to my website.

I am a person that loves to work with data, driven by the challenge of the unknown. I have a PhD in Nuclear Reactor Physics, and more than 7 years of experience working with multidisciplinary projects, ranging from Data Acquisition to Data Analytics, including Mathematical Modelling, Time Series Analysis, and Machine Learning. My data analytics background made me a person with strong attention to details. I am also used to work multi-tasking and in multi-cultural environments.

Experience

Data Scientist Intern

eXact Lab – Trieste, Italy

Collected and structured metadata from scanning electron microscope (SEM) images from Nanoscience Foundries & Fine Analysis (NFFA.EU) European repository. Managed more than 5 TB of data in big data ecosystem. Focused on extraction of metadata from SEM images using Python. The algorithms of metadata extraction were run in a Spark cluster, managed by the Exact Lab Company.

Oct 2019 – Dec 2019

Data Scientist, Portfolio Management

Bradesco Bank – São Paulo, Brazil

Bradesco Bank is one of the biggest banking and financial services companies in Brazil, with more than 28 million current accounts.

I developed machine learning techniques applied to modern portfolio theory and investment analysis.

Dec 2017 – July 2018

Research and Development Scientist (R&D)

University of São Paulo – São Paulo, Brazil

Project Management and Leadership: Had experience in leading a multidisciplinary team of technicians and scientists in projects regarding the design of novel data acquisition methods to improve the efficiency of nuclear reactor fuel and regarding the overcoming of problems related to the shortage of thermal neutron detector manufacturing material. The projects resulted in the publication of articles in peer review journals and USD 500k cost savings.

Mathematical Modelling: Developed mathematical models and methods to describe and understand the behaviour and correlation of neutron fission chains. Applied the Rossi-alpha method, spectral analysis with special regard for Power Spectral Density (APSD and CPSD) analysis and reactor kinetics equations.Achieved a mathematical description of the reactor kinetics when using a reflector material, proving its efficiency.

Grants: Received a grant for research projects from São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).

Sept 2013 – Nov 2017

Research and Development Assistant (R&D)

University of São Paulo – São Paulo, Brazil

Computational Simulations: Carried out a series of Monte Carlo Simulations using the software MCNP (Fortran) in order to guide data acquisition design while guaranteeing safety; Applied machine learning techniques to predict the nuclear reactor criticality.

Data Acquisition Design: Developed and implemented Labview and C++ software for data acquisition and spectral density analysis, speeding up the performance of data processing.

Jan 2011 – Sept 2013

Research Intern

University of São Paulo – Ribeirão Preto, Brazil

Intern at Innovation Group in Medical Instrumentation and Ultrasound (GIIMUS): was part of a multidisciplinary project related to non-linear characteristics of the acoustic propagation of ultrasonic waves and mechanical vibrational response of structures. Had experience with digital image processing and signals processing.
